Continue Browsing TripsBegin your unforgettable shoebill adventure with an early morning departure from Entebbe, as this is the best time to spot the elusive and prehistoric-looking Shoebill Stork in its natural habitat. Your day starts around 6:00 AM with a scenic drive to the shores of Lake Victoria, followed by a short canoe transfer into the Mabamba Swamp, a vast wetland area internationally recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and one of the most reliable places in Uganda to see the shoebill up close.
Upon arrival at the landing site, you will be welcomed by an experienced local guide and boat operator who will provide a short briefing about the swamp and the birding experience. You will then glide through narrow channels lined with papyrus reeds, scanning the swamp for the towering shoebill, known for its massive shoe-shaped bill, slow deliberate movements, and striking presence. The calm atmosphere is occasionally broken by sightings of other wetland species such as the African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Papyrus Gonolek, and Sitatunga antelope.
Once the shoebill is sighted, you will have ample time to observe and photograph it as it stands motionless or stalks its prey, mainly lungfish. Your guide will share fascinating insights about its behavior, breeding habits, and conservation status, enriching your appreciation of this rare species.
After the canoe excursion, return to the landing site for a late-morning refreshment break before heading back to Entebbe or Kampala. For those interested, a stop at a lakeside restaurant can be arranged for lunch, offering relaxation and scenic views of Lake Victoria.
This one-day Mabamba itinerary offers a perfect blend of adventure, nature, and education, making it ideal for bird lovers and eco-tourists seeking an authentic Ugandan wildlife experience.
